What it is

Yaddo is a century-old artists' residency offering professional artists time, space and silence to create their best work. The organisation invites approximately 270 artists per year across six artistic disciplines: literature (novel, short story, creative nonfiction, poetry, drama, translation, librettos); visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media, installations); musical composition (instrumental, vocal, electronic, film music, sound art); performance (choreography, performance art, multimedia, collaborative work with live performance); and film and video (narrative, documentary, experimental, animation, screenplays). Collaborative teams of two to three artists are welcome. Applications are evaluated by independent discipline-specific committees composed of recognised artists. Selection is based on the quality and professional promise of the applicant's work; prior publication, exhibition or performance is not required. International artists are welcome; writers working in languages other than English must submit support materials in both English translation and the original language.
