A label for independent bookstores to recognise, promote and support quality work and commitment. Bookstores must meet criteria for independence, stock diversity, revenue from book sales, staff costs, and cultural programming. Two types of label exist: Librairie indépendante de référence (reference independent bookstore) with stricter capital ownership requirements, and Librairie de référence (reference bookstore) with looser ownership rules but still requiring independence in purchasing decisions.
