What it is

The Gulbenkian New Talents Scholarships programme seeks to identify and support exceptionally talented students and foster their first steps into research in core scientific disciplines (biology, geology, physics, mathematics, chemistry) and any field of humanities, arts or social sciences. The programme includes mentorship by distinguished academics, scientific retreats combining scientific, cultural and social activities, and talent development support.

Who it is for

Students enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a bachelor's degree or integrated master's programme, or in the 1st year of a master's degree during the 2026/2027 academic year at a higher education institution in Portugal, with an average grade of 16.5 or above on a 20-point scale.

Open to artists in Portugal.

What you get

Annual scholarship of €1,000 for research and study support, €1,500 for talent development support (subject to scientific committee approval), and €2,000 supplementary social support (if household annual per capita income does not exceed €14,000), plus mentorship from tutors and scientific committee, and participation in scientific retreats.

  • Online registration form in Portuguese with all mandatory fields
  • Student record showing current grades (screenshot from university student platform acceptable, must show student name)
  • Proof of application to Portuguese Directorate-General for Higher Education's social support grants for 2025/2026 academic year (if applying for supplementary social support)
  • Recommendation letters from referees (will be requested directly by FCG from people indicated by applicant)
