W. Eugene Smith Student Grant 2026

What it is

The W. Eugene Smith Grant for Student Photographers encourages and supports students whose photographic work renews W. Eugene Smith's tradition of dedicated compassion as a photographic essayist. Special consideration is given to work that promotes social change, embraces new technologies and image distribution, and integrates the tradition of photography and social change with contemporary practice. The judges seek photographers and projects using exemplary and compelling photojournalism and documentary photography to address issues of import and impact related to the human condition.

Student photographers at least 18 years old whose work addresses social change, humanitarian concerns, or issues of human significance through photojournalism and documentary photography.

What you get

$5,000 grant ($4,500 upon receipt, $500 upon delivery of 12 images within 18 months) to complete a photographic essay.

What you need to apply

• Biography, up to 1500 words
• CV (optional, up to 2000 characters or unlimited as PDF), up to 2000 words
• Project description (concise synopsis), up to 2000 words
• Project proposal (detailed description of practical aspects and how grant funds will be used), up to 3000 words
• Up to 40 images total (including Student ID as the 40th image), consisting of representative images from the proposed project and/or past work clearly marked as such. No AI generated imagery allowed., 40 required
• Current Student ID as JPG (must be the 40th image uploaded)
