The W. Eugene Smith Grant supports visual storytellers and photographers whose work continues the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's dedicated compassion and photographic essays. The grant prioritizes work promoting social change, embracing new technologies, and addressing issues of human significance including social change, humanitarian concern, armed conflict, and matters of interpersonal, psychological, cultural, social, environmental, scientific, medical, or political significance.
Photographers aged 18 or older whose work addresses issues of social change, humanitarian concern, armed conflict, or other matters of human significance through documentary or photojournalism, including those working collaboratively.
Open to artists anywhere.

The main grant award is $30,000 ($24,000 upon receipt, $6,000 upon submission of images and prints within 18 months). Two additional finalist grants of $10,000 each are also awarded ($8,000 upon receipt, $2,000 upon submission of images within 18 months).
