The Howard Chapnick Grant supports leadership and educational programs in documentary photography and photojournalism. It recognizes programs—not individuals—that make significant contributions to the field through education, research, management, and mentorship. The grant was established in 1996 by the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund to honor Howard Chapnick, a photojournalism pioneer who built networks of photographers and taught at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
