First reading of Flower and Ash, an original post-American story set in a dystopian America. A violent political divide. An epic journey spanning the ruins of Manhattan to the rubble of Gloucester. Two 20-somethings, Flower and Ash, search for something beyond survival. Along the way they form deep bonds with unlikely companions and confront wayward tribes, anarchic Confeds, and the cultural aftermath of The Fall. At its heart, the story is about chosen family, gender identity, love in fractured times, superpowers, and what it means to be truly American. The reading includes 4 lead roles and 6 or more ensemble roles, each playing multiple featured characters. No singing required. Rehearsals Friday November 13 to Monday November 16, times to be determined. Performance Monday November 16 evening at Bespoke Events in Winthrop, Massachusetts (MBTA-accessible, East Boston-adjacent). Non-traditional casting. The reading is produced in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is part of the New Opera and Music Theater Initiative 2026-2027 Advanced Writers Lab season.
Actors of any ethnicity and gender expression are welcome, especially LGBTQ+ performers, for a first reading of an original post-American musical.
Eligibility unconfirmed. Check the residency and nationality rules on the source before applying.
