The W. Eugene Smith Grant supports visual storytellers whose photographic work renews W. Eugene Smith's tradition of dedicated compassion in photographic essays. Special consideration is given to work promoting social change, embracing new technologies and distribution methods, and integrating photography and social change with contemporary practice. Projects should use compelling photojournalism and documentary photography (possibly with multimedia) to address issues of human condition, social change, humanitarian concern, armed conflict, or cultural, social, environmental, scientific, medical and political significance.
Photographers aged 18 or older working in photojournalism and documentary photography who want to pursue a project addressing social change, humanitarian concern, armed conflict, or other issues related to the human condition.
Open to artists anywhere.
