What it is

The Mara-Cassens Prize is awarded annually to a debut novel in German. It is the highest-endowed literary prize for a German-language debut novel and the only literary prize awarded by a reader's jury. The 15-member jury consists exclusively of members of Literaturhaus Hamburg e.V. who do not work professionally in the literary industry. The prize is awarded at a formal public ceremony. Self-published novels and books published through print-on-demand services are not eligible. The novel may not have been financed by a subsidy from the author.
