What it is

The Mara-Cassens Prize, named after its Hamburg-based founder and endowed since 2020 with €20,000, is the highest-funded German-language literary prize for debut novels and the only literature prize awarded by a reader jury. The 15-member jury consists exclusively of members of Literaturhaus Hamburg e.V. who do not work professionally in the literary sector. The prize is presented at a formal public awards ceremony.

Who it is for

German-language authors whose debut novel is being published in 2026. Self-submissions are not permitted; publishers or third parties must submit on behalf of the author.
