What it is

Four consecutive one-month residencies for visual artists to create their own work in the public areas of the museum grounds and in the Art Lab makerspace. Artists work minimum three days per week in public areas (at least 6 hours per day) to create and interact informally with visitors, and two days per week (10am-4:30pm) in the Art Lab guiding participatory drop-in activities. Artists may also study and document works in the collection storage areas. The museum is in a rural location without public transportation; staff provide weekly shuttles to nearby stores.

What you get

A one-month residency in June, July, August, or September 2027 at the Adirondack Experience museum in upstate New York, working in public areas and a makerspace (Art Lab) with museum visitors, plus USD 5,000 stipend, USD 500 travel allowance, USD 250 for Art Lab materials, and on-site housing.

What you need to apply

  • One page letter outlining artist's existing or desired relationship to the Adirondacks, noting how the residency would benefit the artist's body of work and how the region inspires their creativity
  • Artist statement and biography
  • Portfolio of works (8-15 pieces), with at least five works that have been publicly exhibited in museums, public galleries, university galleries, or private galleries, or sold to private collectors (works sold via Etsy and similar online craft retailers do not meet this criteria)
  • Conceptual idea for a drop-in participatory activity for the museum's Art Lab makerspace (final activity to be developed in collaboration with staff)
  • Identification of any known schedule conflicts for each of the four residency months (June, July, August, September 2027)
